Who pays legal fees when selling a house in Alberta?
Normally, each side pays their own lawyer. In a standard Alberta sale, the seller hires a lawyer to discharge the mortgage, clear title, and handle funds — typically somewhere around $1,000–$1,500 depending on complexity — and the buyer pays their own lawyer separately. It’s one of the closing costs sellers forget to budget.
